If you’re planning a Scottish coach tour and want to experience what is perhaps best described as the ‘picture-postcard’ Scotland that you see in the travel brochures then there is only one destination – the Scottish Borders. The Scottish Borders consist of the old counties of Berwickshire, Peebleshire, Roxburyshire and Selkirkshire. The region does not have a massive population but it covers well over 1800 square miles and is perhaps the most well-known and constantly visited regions of Scotland, if not throughout the entire United Kingdom. That is because those 1800 square miles are made up of gorgeous forests and glens, dazzling lakes, streams, rivers and lochs, undulating hills and craggy awesome coastline that never seems to end. The Borders stretch from the east of Berwickshire to the Southern Uplands and from the River Tweed to the North Sea. With expansive fertile, farming plains in the east and wild, desolate moorland in the west as well as thousands of picturesque and enchanting fishing villages dotted around the unbelievable romantic Berwickshire coastline and located betwixt and between crashing, fierce waves and hidden coves, this really is God’s own country.

Maybe that is the reason it has also been the site of so many infamous fights and battles and the reason that it now is blessed with so much rich history and ancientsites, from castles and towers to old Roman remains and ancient abbeys. From the splendid gardens and houses of Kailzie, Dawyck, and Alnwick Castles to the wonders of the 14th century Hermitage castle and from the stately homes of Mellerstain, Manderston, Floors Castle and Abbotsford as well as the thousands of acres of historic gardens and parks; history is to be found at every turn in the Scottish Borders region. Also well worth visiting are the Royal Burgh of Jedburgh and the fabulous Jedburgh Abbey (which was first established in 1138), Neidpath castle, Bowhill House and the Country Park, the magical Kelso Abbey (established in 1128) and Smeilhome Tower. One other site worth visiting is Eildon Hill North where there is a decent walk that will take you along to the remnants of the largest hill-fort in all of Scotland, one which dates as far back in history as the 9th century BC.

In fact for anyone who fancies themselves to get out into the wild and do some hiking or walking, there is even history to be found in the incredible natural all over the Borders region. The beguiling Yarrow and Ettrick Valleys were the ancient hunting grounds for almost all of Scotland’s old kings and the valleys have long since passed into legend though novels, myths, poems and stories including those written by Sir Walter Scott and James Hogg. Passing from St Mary’s Loch onto the outer parts of greater Selkirk they are an extremely popular location for fishing and sailing, climbing, walking and cycling,. Whether you decide to go touring around unspoiled villages, hiking on wild moorland or strolling along gentle rivers or even rambling through the undulating hills, there is something for everyone in this magical county. Stay at one of the ancient hotels or if you are on a budget look out for any of the hundreds of hostels scattered about the place. Get about on foot, by bike or take a coach tour. Fish in the famous lochs, play golf on the world-renowned fairways or simply sit with a picnic and book on the sandy beaches along the coast; but whatever you do, make sure you visit the Scottish Borders.
